Alexander Romanovich signed the Memorandum on Cooperation between Party A JUST RUSSIA and the Movement of Social Democrats of Cyprus 05 мая 2016 On 5 May 2016, Alexander Romanovich, Vice-Chairman of the State Duma who is also the Secretary of the Presidium of the Central Council on Foreign Affairs of Party A JUST RUSSIA signed the Memorandum on Cooperation between JR and the Movement of Social Democrats of Cyprus (EDEK). On the part of the Cyprus Movement, the document was signed by Marinos Sizopoulos, the EDEK Chairman. Stanislav Osadchiy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Cyprus was also present at the ceremony. Long standing cooperation between Party A JUST RUSSIA and the given social-democratic party has been not only bilateral, but both parties have been working together within the framework of the programs and projects of the Socialist International.. In his speech at the signing ceremony, Alexander Romanovich stressed that both signatories fully appreciate the importance and vital significance of cooperation between the two parties and development of the friendly and mutually beneficial links between Russia and Cyprus. The deputy emphasized the traditional relations of friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries based on the principles of good neighborliness, and mutual respect for their rights and interests. The JR representative especially stressed the fact that the visit to the Russian capital to the 9 May Victory parade paid by Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades was highly appreciated by the leadership of the country and the Russian society. Alexander Romanovich noted that the bilateral foreign policy agenda is distinguished by both coincidence and closeness of approaches of Russia and Cyprus to the topical European and regional problems. He also expressed his belief that cooperation between the two parties and the Memorandum to be signed on that day would contribute to the solution of the complicated but a highly significant issue the European community is facing now. According to Alexander Romanovich, doing this requires promotion of bilateral cooperation of all party structures, of the youth and women’s organizations as well as use of the potential of the so-called people’s diplomacy. This is what the whole range of the ways and measures coordinated in the Memorandum is targeted at. Moreover, the document does not limit either the range of forms and measures of cooperation or their content; it says directly that the Memorandum is the basis for conclusion of additional relevant agreements between the two parties. In particular, there has already been reached an agreement on cooperation between the youth and women’s party structures of JR and EDEK. During his visit to Cyprus, Alexander Romanovich had a meeting with EDEK Honorary Chairman Vasos Lissaridis and some leading members of EDEK.
