Nikolai Levichev: closing of airspace to the planes with humanitarian aid is inhuman and an openly short-sighted act 08 сентября 2015 Nikolai Levichev, Vice-Chairman of the State Duma commented on the refusal of Bulgaria to give access to its airspace to Russian planes wit humanitarian aid for Syria: Having taken this decision, regardless the motives, the Bulgarian authorities joined the opponents of the acting system of international relations. Closing of airspace to the planes with humanitarian aid for Syria suffering from the war is inhuman and an openly short-sighted act. It is a paradox but now the countries against which the sanctions were imposed turn out to be the only keepers of the principles of humanity. Damascus counteracts the Islamic State radicals, Moscow sends its aid, Teheran is ready to give an air corridor to its delivery but it is only the West which "is putting a spoke in the wheel". The government of Bulgaria immediately said "Yes" and obeyed the Washington’s order. Some other flight routes have already been found for the Russian planes but the way of confrontation with Russia chosen by the official Bulgaria is sure to be of no use for the Bulgarian people. It was Russia that brought freedom from the rule of the Ottoman Empire to the Balkan peoples in the 19th century and contributed to foundation of the Bulgarian state system. The Bulgarian government seems to have short memory but the Russians have a good one. We will not forget this unfriendly act and find an adequate answer.
