Sergei Mironov: all attempts to scare people who decide on visiting Crimea are doomed

23 июля 2015

Sergei Mironov, Chairman of Party A JUST RUSSIA, the Leader of its State Duma parliamentary bloc commented on the visit of a delegation of the French parliamentarians to Crimea:

Kiev is discontented that the French parliamentary delegation is heading to Crimea. The Ukrainian authorities condemned the visit saying it would carry certain consequences. How can Kiev frighten France, I wonder? Sanctions? Is Kiev going to ban them from entering the Ukrainian territory?

Poroshenko’s irritation is understandable: the French MPs do not fly non-stop, but through Moscow. From the political and diplomatic point of view, it is absolutely reasonable, and there is nothing unusual about it: without a visit, dialogue is out of the question. Moreover, it is high time for Western politicians to visit Crimea to see firsthand what is going on there.

But Poroshenko is angry, he does dislike that the Western deputies are heading to Crimea. Furthermore, he is eager to demonstrate that he is not just a president but a powerful figure on the European space whose hail will be obeyed immediately.

Of course, Kiev will fail to scare people who decide on visiting Crimea. Firstly, all bans like ‘Don’t go there, do come here!’ are absolutely unworkable. Secondly, discouraging the Europeans from visiting Crimea will make the opposite true sooner or later: "Forbidden" Crimea will become even more magnetic for them.
