Sergei Mironov: Russia and the USA must address the greatest challenges of the 21st century together 17 июля 2015 It has been 40 years since the event people of our generation remember quite well: the Soviet SOYUZ 19 spacecraft docked with American APOLLO. In those days much was said about cooperation between the USSR and the USA in development of outer space, bright future, even friendship between the two nations. It was not only the matter of politics; everyone was sincerely excited about the fact that two great powers were really cooperating and joining their efforts in space exploration. Forty years is a long period of time. The USSR (afterwards Russia) and the USA were partners and enemies at solution of important international challenges at that time. But still there remained hope for ability of the two great countries not only to compete but also to work for solution of global issues. Now the USA declares in public that Russia has become enemy number one for the U.S. At present we don’t speak either about cooperation in the sphere of space or joint efforts in fighting against terrorism and at solution of the global social and ecological problems. Why? Is it the imperial laurels that give no peace? Is it desire for a unipolar world? Is it desire to announce the whole world the zone of "America’s vital interests"? Well, there is another significant reason – lack of foresight, a "spoiled" strategic sight. At present the USA does not want, cannot even think about the idea that our countries are able to cooperate and must participate together in solution of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Instead, there are attempts of dictate doomed for failure. But an opportunity for cooperation still remains. It is necessary just to think not about the current political victory but about tomorrow’s peace the future of which depends on our common efforts.
