Saint-Petersburg hosts the first Conference of the Russian Social-Democratic Women’s Union

Saint-Petersburg hosted the first Conference of the All-Russian Public Movement "The Russian Social-democratic Women’s Union" participated by delegates from 29 regions of the country.

The conference agenda included the following issues: the report of RSDWU Chairman Nataliya Velikaya on activities of the organization since its foundation in 2012, reelection of the Chairman of the Union, and setting the priority areas of its activity. Nadezhda Tikhonova, Chairman of the RSDWU Saint-Petersburg regional division was elected the conference moderator and Marina Miroshina – its secretary.

The guests were welcomed by RSDWU Chairman Nataliya Velikaya whose report particularly emphasized the dynamic work of the regions, cooperation with various women’s organizations, work performed together with the State Duma deputies that was aimed at introducing the urgent gender issues to the level of legislation, and participation in the international social-democratic conferences.

Olga Ovcharova, a coordinator of the Research Committee on Gender Political Science of the Russian Association of Political Sciences reported on "The Projects of Women’s Organizations: socially significant functions". In her speech, Ms. Ovcharova singled out four principal functions of women’s organizations: gender education of the society, establishment of the principles of gender equality, translation of historical memory and its preservation, consolidation of women’s movements and modernization of society.

Nadezhda Tikhonova, Chairman of the RSDWU Saint-Petersburg regional division raised the problem of prevention of domestic violence. She declared that in her opinion, the problem of domestic violence must be one of the key directions of the union’s activity and called for insistence on reintroduction of draft law "On prevention of domestic violence" for its consideration by the State Duma. To attract public attention, Nadezhda Tikhonova proposed to arrange gathering of signatures in support of the law, and arrange various interesting events with involvement of the youth (one-person pickets, work in social networks).

Psychologist Helen Sporyagina told the audience about the importance for the movement leaders to create an effective and adjustable image that might help them cooperate with mass audience. She gave some pieces of advice regarding selection of fabric and color of clothes, the accessories and jewelry that would be suitable in various situations.

Vadim Belov, Editor-in-Chief of magazine "The Socialist" also made a report devoted to "The social-cultural borders of gender equality: between archaism and postmodernism". Marina Milovanova, the head of the RSDWU Moscow region division spoke about implementation of the social-patriotic projects, new directions of work at formation of the movement succession pool, its lifecycle and filling for the nearest prospects. Ekaterina Fesik, a member of the Presidium of the RSDWU Saint-Petersburg regional division shared her experience of a joint work with the feminists’ movement and proposed to try to use this format for cooperation in the other regions.

The first day of the conference finished with viewing of the dress rehearsal of charity performance "Recollection. Monologue. Blessing" called to attract attention to the domestic violence problem. Non-professional actresses (feminists) took part in the performance. All the funds derived later from the performance will be used for payment of the lawyer who helps the rape victims.

The Presidium of the movement elected by a general open vote includes Rushany Bilgildeeva, Nataliya Velikaya, Nataliya Kiselyova, Marina Milovanova, Marina Miroshina, Ekaterina Nikonorova, Galina Putintseva, Nadezhda Tikhonova and Liudmila Turik; Nataliya Velikaya was again elected the RSDWU Chairman.

At the conclusion of the conference, there was passed a resolution determining the principal directions of the RSDWU activities.

"We, the participants of the first Conference of the All-Russian Public Movement "Russian Social-Democratic Women’s Union" (hereinafter-Conference) who are the representatives of 29 RF regions share the basic values of social democracy and stand for the society of justice, equal rights and opportunities for everyone.

We declare about our intention to continue work on protection and implementation of the principles of gender equality in Russia.

For purposes of the development of the All-Russian movement, the Conference participants made the decision:

– to bring a proposal on behalf of the regional divisions of the Russian Social-Democratic Women’s Union to create consultative (public) councils on gender equality under the bodies of power of the RF subjects and at the highest officials;

– to support women aspiring to put into practice their social experience in the sphere of politics;

– to use the resources of the Russian Social-Democratic Women’s Union for provision of a legal, psychological and information support of the women candidates for deputy in elections to various levels of power;

– to apply to the leadership of the RF political parties with a proposal to establish quotas when developing party lists for elections;

– to make actual the significance of the social position and citizen participation through gender enlightenment and education;

– to strive for implementation of all measures of social policy, effective social adaptation in the spheres of public health and education, support of motherhood and childhood, the sphere of labor, and protection of women’s private interests;

– to strive for adoption of the legislation against domestic violence;

-to continue to make all possible efforts for consolidation of women’s movement in Russia".
