Sergei Mironov: the SS march in Latvia is evidence that fascism is still alive 16 марта 2015 Sergei Mironov, Chairman of Party A JUST RUSSIA, the leader of the State Duma faction of the party commented on the news about the events in honor of "the day of commemoration" of "the Latvian Waffen SS legion": The so-called "day of the Latvian legionnaires" will be celebrated in a rather solemn atmosphere: there is going to be a parade of the former SS-men to the monument of Freedom in Riga, laying of flowers at the memorial cemetery in Lestene where the SS legionnaires are buried, and some other events in the other cities of Latvia. While Russia is preparing for the celebration of a really historical date – the 70th anniversary of the Victory over fascism, the banner of fascism is still flying over Latvia. The EU countries (a lot of them suffered from fascism during World War II) neither see nor want to notice it. Moreover, It is Russia whom they accuse of all the sins., the country which together with the other USSR republics saved them 70 years ago. This is not just a mere loss of historical memory. Right on the contrary: it is a real treason of peoples’ friendship and a crime before our future. Fascism has not died yet. It is not only the matter of attempts to "revive the past" in Latvia. Have a look at what is going on in Ukraine now! Fascism really exists now, it threatens the peace and lives of people. It dies hard, and its past may grow out in the present, sprout and then produce blossom in the future. On May 9, Russia is going to celebrate the holiday "with tears in eyes", thinking of not only the victory but also remembering the price we had to pay for it. In this respect, the SS marches and parades as well as any other activity of fascism are not just insult of our history but a challenge which we are able to give a proper response to.
