Mikhail Emelyanov: extension of American sanctions imposed against Russia is an act of despair 04 марта 2015 US President Barak Obama extends a series of sanctions imposed against Russia because of despair while in Europe stronger voices are being raised for softening the sanctions or their lifting. This is the opinion given by Mikhail Emelyanov, first deputy leader of the State Duma faction of Party A JUST RUSSIA. "Using the sanctions, Obama hoped to compel Russia to change its foreign policy but their negative impact is minimal, Extension of the sanctions is nothing but an act of despair," Mikhail Emelyanov said. He also thinks that the problems Russia is facing now are connected with devaluation of the rouble, and the sanctions provided domestic producers with an opportunity for recovering and strengthening. "According to the data from August to December, production of cheese in Russia grew by 26% and pork – by 20%; domestic producers got a chance to develop", the deputy said having stressed that it is necessary to make the most use of the effects of the sanctions. Then Mr. Emelyanov continued saying that it is Europe that mostly suffers from the American sanctions against Russia. "The EU should demonstrate more independence," the deputy declared. He is convinced that there is a lobby in Europe which insists that the sanctions should be lifted. Greece, Cyprus and Hungary especially strongly oppose the sanctions imposed on Russia. The voices for lifting the sanctions may also be heard in Poland. As for Germany, there is no unanimity about this issue even there. Mikhail Emelyanov is sure that if Europe supports the USA and the sanctions are extended, Russia must give a dignified answer. "It is necessary to impose countersanctions, for example, introduce some limitations on the import of canned goods and second-hand cars," the politician thinks. We would like to remind you that US President Barack Obama extended the sanctions against Russia for a year. The first sanctions against Russia were imposed in March 2014.
