Alexander Romanovich:Washington imposes "a block discipline" on Europe

08 äåêàáðÿ 2014

Alexander Romanovich, a deputy of the "A JUST RUSSIA" State Duma faction, the Secretary of the Presidium of the A JUST RUSSIA Party Central Council on Foreign Affairs made comments on an interview of German Chancellor Angela Merkel with the newspaper "Die Welt" in which she expressed criticism (among other things) of the Russian foreign policy and announced her support of the sanctions against Russia.

After the interview of German Chancellor Angela Merkel was published in the newspaper "Die Welt" on Sunday, it became clear that even she (with all her influence and ambition to play the leading part in Europe) had to submit to "a block discipline" imposed by Washington.

It is known that such ‘heavyweights’ of German politics as Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schreder applied to the acting Chancellor of FRG Angela Merkel with a call to set a more conciliatory course in relation to Russia.

Both Helmuts and Schreder are well-known as people who are rather sophisticated not only in the world and European politics but especially in the Russian-German relations. Moreover, they have made an extremely positive contribution in the sphere of mutual relations. Even the fact of their joint call means a lot, and first of all, that unlike her retired predecessors, Angela Merkel is unfortunately not free in her judgments.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have answered her opponents so directly in the newspaper "Die Welt" that she considered the united European reaction to Russia’s actions as the right one.

Furthermore, Merkel is a bit late with her principle argument that "the fact that Russia violated guarantees of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty legally secured by the Budapest Memorandum 1994 cannot be left without consequences."

The interview seems to have been composed still without taking into account President Putin’s address where the Russian Leader highlighted the legal aspect of the issue. There was held a referendum in Crimea during which the residents of the peninsula openly declared their wish to join Russia. Then followed the decision passed by the absolutely legitimate Crimean Parliament (elected still in 2010) concerning independence and a historical reunification of Crimea and Sevastopol with Russia.

Moreover, Mrs. Merkel’s statements regarding the association with EU of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine were completely imprecise. According to the Chancellor, these countries have taken sovereign decisions to sign an association agreement with the EU, and now Russia is creating problems for all three of these countries."

God forbid! By no means is Moscow encroaching on the sovereignty of the three. Russia just explains its neighbors and the current integration scheme partners what they will have to sacrifice or what they will lose in case of an ‘economic divorce’ with CIS. We do it not because we are nasty (as it seems to someone in the West) but just because we cannot be indifferent to the problems and hardships of the fraternal nations who already have more than enough problems.

If truth be told, the statements to the Russian address that are similar to the ones made in "Die Welt" make us feel satisfaction even though they are far from being objective. They only show once again that international problems of any significance cannot be solved without Russia.

I’d like to remind that besides Merkel’s claims dictated from overseas, on the credit side of Russia (in the last days alone) is the decision on the "Southern Flow" and a constructive dialogue with Turkey, and even a compelled improvisation of the French President with his flight to Moscow for having a talk with Mr. Putin.
