Alexander Romanovich about the necessity of putting an end to the economic, trade and financial embargo against the Republic of Cuba 21 октября 2014 On October 21, the State Duma considered Draft Resolution No 624468-6 "On Address of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to the General Assembly of the United Nations, the parliaments of the UN member-states, and international parliamentary organizations about the necessity of putting an end to the economic, trade and financial embargo against the Republic of Cuba". Alexander Romanovich spoke at the State Duma on behalf of the A JUST RUSSIA faction: Dear colleagues and dear Ivan Ivanovich, of course, on the one hand, I’d like to dispute with the speakers, to be exact, with the previous one. I would not mostly agree with what Vladimir Volfovich Zhirinovsky has just said but such a dispute might take far too much time. That’s why I decided to draw your attention to some emotional moments in the discussion of the document we’re going to vote for today. Cuba occupies a very important place in my biography, I was doing my military service there, and I feel deep sympathy for its people. The Cubans managed to surpass us in some aspects even within the framework of the ideological doctrine of that time, and first of all, from the point of view of humans. People of my generation remember the soviet super-objective – formation of the new man. We sinned by imitating its performance, and to a large extent we mistook the wish for the reality; as for the Cubans, in my view, they have really reached success in formation of the new man. They have formed a normal ‘healthy’ patriotism which is not so much ideological but the one based on a sincere belief in the community spirit, in the success of a difficult opposition to America which announced a blockade against them. In 1975 the Soviet Union and Cuba decided to provide Angola a joint support to counteract the aggression of SAR, with the United States of America at its back. The Cubans sent their military contingent consisting mainly of Afro Cuban military personnel. Those were really the volunteers. It was Fidel Castro who called them out for that expedition and instructed them for such a dangerous operation. The Cubans demonstrated miracles of courage and perfect military training. There were neither deserters nor defectors there, not a single one. I worked a lot with the Cubans under very difficult conditions in the third world countries, in Africa for example. Those guys were always committed to their country, common goal and ready to come to rescue. They loved and respected the Soviet people as well as now they call and see us a fraternal nation for the Cubans. The people of Cuba deserve a better, comfortable life. They have done a lot in their country in spite of the sanctions and the blockade. They provided an international help for other nations, reached success in sports, medical sphere and education. They may and have the right to become full members of the international community, full participants in the international cooperation, without any populist limitations and sanctions. This is what we are going to vote for today. Cuba is remarkable, and they who protect this country, love it still more. Thank you.
